The Cost of The Lie

Everything God spoke became something tangible. His very Word gave us substance and form. When He created us it is written, “let us make man in our image, after our likeness…” Being in very nature the likeness of God, there is also power in our word. We can either “speak the truth in love…” or use deception to cover over an improper attitude of the heart or an act of selfishness against another.

It was a lie that corrupted the entire creation. The devil set the stage for us to live in the spirit of deception and step outside of God’s grace and truth.

As soon as Adam and Eve acted on what the devil spoke, they gave life to the spirit of the lie, and in disobeying God’s truth brought sin and death into the whole of creation. Just as grace and truth is the Spirit of Jesus; pride and lies is the spirit of the devil. He is referred to as the “father of lies.” So when we lie we are actually invoking a spirit and are manipulating God’s truth in our lives. Lying has a great cost, just look at our history from God’s standpoint. The spirit of the lie is the very substance of sin and unbelief much the same as faith is the substance of things hoped for. The final and greatest cost of the devil’s first big lie was the sacrifice God made to bring us back into His grace and truth.

When we lie to each other we are actually putting a wall between ourselves and the person or people we are lying to.  A relationship being built upon lies will eventually disintegrate. We are walking in darkness and have not the truth. 1st John 1:6-10 gives us a clear example of what we need to be doing in order to have fellowship with each other:

“If we say we have fellowship with him, and walk in darkness, we lie, and do not the truth: But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.”

Meaning of the word Fellowship: Companionship; society; consort; mutual association of persons on equal and friendly terms.

Noah Webster 1828 Dictionary

How We Keep Fellowship:

Walking in the light is simply being transparent with one another walking in the Spirit of grace and truth. By confessing and renouncing our hidden faults to one another we are allowing ourselves to remain in the light of his love and therefore we reach the blood of Jesus cleansing us from ALL unrighteousness.

How We Lose Fellowship:

As soon as we try to hide our hidden faults we invoke the spirit of deception in order to cover our guilty conscience; thus a wall is put between us and those we lie too thereby breaking our fellowship. In so doing we make God out to be a liar, because his truth has no place in us.

The spirit of truth is Jesus Christ, and the spirit of the lie is the devil.
