The idea of prayer to an unbeliever is looked at as either a foolish waste of time or a form of meditation, depending on who you’re talking to.
To a true Christian it is as indispensable as breathing for the body.
Essentially we should be in a constant state of prayer.
Rejoice evermore.
Pray without ceasing.
In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
Just as we are to speak to those around us using the breath in our lungs as the means to do so, we speak to our Father with the breath of the Spirit. As we engage Him with our physical voice, we bring the flesh into the pattern of the spirit within us who speaks to the Father with unuttered groaning.
Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.
Romans 8:26
Meditation on the other hand is a concentrated mental focus on something whether it be an image, an idea, or a principle.
Meditation is also a valuable part of our Christian walk in that it is a willful means to direct our attention to a particular end.
But his delight is in the law of the Lord; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.
Psalms 1:2
As we meditate on God’s word, we are digging deep and planting ourselves in His presence.
And he shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of waters, that bringeth forth his fruit in his season; his leaf also shall not wither; and whatsoever he doeth shall prosper.
Psalms 1:3
Great peace and treasure await those who meditate on the word of God.
Jesus prayed with every available moment He had.
And it came to pass in those days, that he went out into a mountain to pray, and continued all night in prayer to God.
Luke 6:12
We are called to pray in the Old Testament…
If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.
2 Chronicles 7:14
Then shall ye call upon me, and ye shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you.
Jeremiah 29:12
… And in the New Testament:
Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
Matthew 26:41
Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child shall in no wise enter therein.
Luke 18:1-7
Continue in prayer, and watch in the same with thanksgiving.
