If you are struck on the cheek, your gut instinct is to strike back. This is the law of tooth for tooth, eye for an eye. This is an example of the law written in the flesh; each of us is a god unto ourselves having been created in His image and likeness, we are carriers of the law. Therefore, the law has us condemned within ourselves when we break it and our conscience is the one who stands to testify against us.
He hath made everything beautiful in his time, also he has set the world in their heart so that no man can find out the work that God maketh from beginning to the end.
Ecclesiates 3:11
We are all going to spend eternity somewhere, the question is where?
Speak not evil one of another, brethren. He that speaketh evil of his brother, and judgeth his brother, speaketh evil of the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judge the law, thou art not a doer of the law but a judge
James 4:11
For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves. Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another.
Romans 2:14-15
Therefore this law, written in our flesh, is God’s perfect law, and this is what Moses was given to share with us. In order that we may see the sinful nature within us for what it is. When we see that we fail to keep this law in our lives we realize that we are wrong, or rather sinners. This leads to the next question, what is the payment for our crime? And do we have the means to pay it? These two questions lead us to one of two eternal destinies, the first is punishment. However if we are to take God up on His offer that He will pay our balance if we will just accept in faith His Son and the price He paid for us on the cross; we gain eternal salvation.
When a person does not accept Jesus as their personal Saviour and is not born again in the spirit, when they die, they die in their sins and there is an eternal consequence for this… punishment. Their sins have never been paid for their entire life. They all add up. The only way that sins can be paid for is by the blood of Jesus, anything short of that is ineffective and in vain.
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.
Hebrews 10:4
Nothing that you do in your life can pay for your sins. No amount of money, no amount of good deeds,
For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away: his glory shall not descend after him.
Psalm 49:17
But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the Lord hath laid on him the iniquity of us all.
Isaiah 53: 5-6
