The Second Death

“He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; He that overcometh shall not be hurt of the second death.

~ Revelation 2:11

Quite simply the second death is the eternal lake of fire. Anyone who has not received salvation through Jesus is headed there as a result of the corruption of the sin nature in their lives. It is written, “The wages of sin is death…” therefore we all face the first death, for, “all have sinned and come short…”  In order to be found in the “Lamb’s book of life”, we must be born again.

The second death was not meant for man but for the devil and his angels. God does not want to see anyone go to hell, so He offered up His Son as a sacrifice to cover the debt we owe for offending His perfect law of love. Until this is paid we are sentenced to the second death for the role we played in our lives bringing sin into the world.

Everything has a price: Every thought, every action and every desire. In order to be holy and just, God set forth a standard (His law). By His standard we are to live if we want to have fellowship with Him. But due to our fallen nature, which is in rebellion, we have all failed and thus deserve the judgement. It is only through Christ that we escape the corruption in the world as a result of our desires and it is only through Christ that we have any hope of our individual name being written in the “Lamb’s book of life.”

“Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.”

Revelation 20:6

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

Revelation 20:14+15

“But the fearful, and unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and whoremongers, and sorcerers, and idolaters, and all liars, shall have their part in the lake which burneth with fire and brimstone: which is the second death.

Revelation 21:8

“Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.”

~ 2 Peter 1:4
